Marie Shim, one of Henderson’s own, turned 102 on June 20th.
Born in 1909, Marie admits to living a full and satisfying life. Marie (nee Schlegel) married the local barber, Lee Geronime and raised her two children, Lee and Jean, in Henderson. She worked as a teacher and principal at the Belle Plaine School for 24 years.
After her first husband died, she married Frank Shim and moved to Hawaii. Frank and Marie loved to travel and “visited every country in the world.”
Having moved back to Henderson in 1999, Marie said she would still be living here if she hadn’t had a stroke last year.
She can no longer walk and her eyesight is failing, yet Marie finds life at the Le Sueur Nursing home comfortable. “They read for me and write for me. They are very good about helping me any way they can. I have good eats, a good roof… I don’t know what more you could ask for,” said Marie. “But it isn’t home.”
“Hatched, matched and soon to be dispatched,” is how Marie sums up her connection to Henderson. “But I don’t know when.”
